Terrie Ajile Axam, Founder and Artistic
Director of Total Dance / Dancical Productions, Inc. nurtured the
idea of creating an arts organization that enriches the quality
of life through dance while attending Princeton University and Rutgers
University. Upon returning to her native Atlanta, Georgia in 1985,
Axam founded Total Dance Theatre. Initially housed in a classroom
at Atlanta's Arts Exchange, Total Dance Theatre emphasized socially
significant programming. In 1989, the company moved to a storefront
in Southwest Atlanta.With increased community involvement and enrollment,
Total Dance relocated to a loft in downtown Atlanta. In 1992, Axam
expanded by incorporating as Dancical Productions, Inc. and 1994
she established a central office in Atlanta's upbeat Rio Mall. Presently,
Dancical Productions, Inc. is located on M. L. King Jr. Drive in
Southwest Atlanta.
Total Dance Company's
accomplishments include the following highlights: Representing the
United States in the 1993 Goodwill Tour to China; Collaborator with
guest choreographers during the 1994 Cultural Olympiad Summer Dance
Institute; Featured in 1996 and 2000 National Black Arts Festival;
Community performances such as "For Sisters Only," Turner Broadcasting
Trumpet Awards; the United Negro College Fund Celebrity Fundraiser,
Black Expo, and the Sweet Auburn Festival.
Many members of the Axam family support Dancical Productions as
administrators, performers, and volunteers. The founder's parents,
George and *Dorimell Borders Axam have especially been staunch supporters
of the company, giving generously of their love, time and philanthropic
support.
